Tottenham trail Barcelona in the race for Bundesliga winning defensive ace

James Maddison claims Tottenham Hotspur are better when he plays.

Tottenham need reinforcements at the back not just because of their defensive frailties but also to have decent alternatives for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, both of whom have had not only injury concerned of late but also reports linking them away from the club.

To that end, however, it looks like one of Spurs’ major centre-back target is on his way to LaLiga.

Tottenham fall behind in Jonathan Tah pursuit as Barcelona take lead

As reported by TeamTalk, Barcelona are the front-runners for the signature of Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah.

A veteran of the German Bundesliga, Tah led Leverkusen side from the back as they completed a historic unbeaten campaign in the league and paired it up with the DFB-Pokal trophy.

Tottenham have been one of many clubs monitoring the 28-year-old‘s situation as his €2.83m-per-year contract enters the final six months in January.

Valued by Transfermarkt at €30 million, Tah has made 17 appearances this season for Die Werkself across all competitions, scoring one goal.

Tah unlikely to choose Tottenham

Every time Barça try to sign a player these days, it’s completely justifiable to ask, “Where are they going to find the room in the budget to register this one, then?”

As long as the Blaugrana manage to do that, Tah can be considered a decent pick-up, especially for free. The Germany connection with Hansi Flick and Marc-André ter Stegen makes him an even tastier prospect, someone who could lead this exceptionally talented but young Barça side.

Tah turns 29 in February and will only be looking at an upgrade on not only his contract but also the status of his next club. It’s unlikely he will pick Tottenham over Barcelona.
