Postecoglou wants to knock Pep and Man City off the top
Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou does not beat around the bush when it comes to dealing with the media. More often than not, his witty responses throw the press officers into laughter while on other occasions, he has a diplomatic way of dealing with questions that are asked with the intent of causing controversy and creating major headlines. Meanwhile, he remains a well-respected name in the footballing industry too.
Recently, the Australian was asked about his opinion on Pep Guardiola renewing his contract at Manchester City until 2026. Postecoglou was asked if the former Bayern Munich manager’s extension at Etihad Stadium would prove detrimental to Spurs’ ambitions of rubbing shoulders with clubs in the upper echelons. He said the following (quoted by ESPN).
I look at it the other way — ‘imagine you knock him off?’ That would be something, eh? And I’m at the stage of my life where I’d rather have a chance of knocking him off than missing that opportunity. In the right way, obviously.”
Postecoglou’s words come from an ambitious point of view, in the sense that he believes he has what it takes to take Guardiola on. However, one could argue that it is a bit hilarious if he expects Tottenham Hotspur to be the club that would be able to usurp the Citizens in the near future, especially given that he has had a massive lack of support from the higher authority.
A series of poor results have already put his job under massive scrutiny, in spite of how much respect the fans and players have for him, while the less said the better about how poor the club has done in the transfer windows to not add to its squad depth in recent years. That’s not to say that Spurs cannot win a piece of silverware any time soon but to knock a club like Man City off is very agreeably too optimistic.

In saying that, Postecoglou, solely on an individual basis, has proven that he can get Pep Guardiola’s number in a race to the top by knocking off Manchester City in the Carabao Cup. It will be interesting to see if his players can back a part of his recent statement up in the subsequent rounds of the competition or the former Celtic boss faces the grim reality of managing Tottenham soon.
