Matty Wells lauds Dominic Solanke’s impact since joining Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur spent big money in the summer as they signed Dominic Solanke, who has been a like-for-like replacement on the pitch for Harry Kane, after he departed for Bayern Munich last summer in a lucrative switch. The former Bournemouth star has settled in well in north London and is going from strength to strength.

While the Premier League top four remains a very competitive battle, Tottenham are very much alive in three different cup competitions and Solanke’s form will be key in determining their final outcome in those. Nevertheless, his impact on the club has been hailed by one of Ange Postecoglou’s assistants, Matty Wells, who said the following on the Inside Spurs podcast.

“Football-wise, it’s his all-around game and his pressing—it’s second to none. You look at his physical numbers, which he’s producing every week; in just two game weeks, he’s doing it against Manchester City and then Aston Villa at the weekend. His mentality, first and foremost, is outstanding, and his physical capacity to continually churn out those numbers is really impressive. It also helps that he’s a top finisher who doesn’t just score goals but makes them as well, linking our play together beautifully. We’re really pleased to have him, and long may it continue.”

Solanke made a slow start to life in the English capital and even suffered an injury setback very early on in his career at Tottenham, though he has bounced back with six goals in all competitions in addition to three assists. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, he should be able to hit the 25 mark as far as offensive contributions go.

Postecoglou has not demanded much from the striker, though his work rate off the ball is phenomenal and it is his mentality that particularly takes him to the next level. In truth, it is not surprising to see Solanke have as much willpower as he has built a successful career for himself after unsuccessful stints at two very good clubs in the past, Chelsea and Liverpool.

It is players of his mentality who could be the difference between the last few failed attempts at conquering trophies and Spurs winning their first piece of silverware in nearly two decades. At 26, the best is yet to come for a striker who has still not touched the peak of his career and in Solanke, it is fair to say that Spurs have a superb and ambitious player.
