Teddy Sheringham backs Ange Postecoglou to succeed at Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou’s future as the Tottenham Hotspur head coach had come under a bit of scrutiny over the last few weeks before the team alleviated some pressure off the former Celtic boss with a 4-0 hammering of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Most fans, however, can agree that relieving the Australian of his duties would have been an absolutely pathetic decision.

Tottenham legend Teddy Sheringham believes just as much and feels like Postecoglou is absolutely the right man to lead the Lilywhites, and believes it could be just a matter of time before they are able to get their hands on a trophy. Football London quoted Sheringham saying the following words in an interaction with Best Offshore Sportsbooks.

“Everyone at the club has bought into it completely, without a doubt, and I think Tottenham fans should as well, because they must be more excited in this last season and a half than they have been for the last five years under Mourinho and Conte where you’re watching a team hoping to get a breakaway goal and nick a result against Norwich at home, Southampton at home. Without a doubt, the objective for Tottenham is to win something this season. They’ve got to win something. Postecoglou told us that he always wins something in the second season and I’m fully behind him. They’ve got a team that is inconsistent. They’re in for three – the cups – and you can afford to be a bit inconsistent in those because its game-to-game.”

Postecoglou has an ambitious personality but also has the patience, which perhaps Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho did not have, that ultimately led to their firings. The former Chelsea bosses were also perhaps a bit too demanding in the transfer market, which seems like a characteristic that Daniel Levy does not want to endorse. The Spurs chief has provided meagre support to his current head coach, it is fair to say, but Postecoglou has worked with his limited resources without being vocal about the club’s shortcomings.

Admittedly, Tottenham have been lacklustre and inconsistent in the Premier League over different patches though they may be forgiven if they are able to win a trophy or two. Their FA Cup campaign is about to get underway soon, they sit comfortably in the UEFA Europa League and face another crunch outing shortly in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United. And while a top-four berth is a major objective, a new addition to the Tottenham trophy cabinet will ensure that that crack is papered over.

Tottenham and Postecoglou are currently in everybody’s good books after beating champions Manchester City but with eight games to come in December across three competitions, the last thing they can afford to do is rest on their laurels. Only time will tell if the players are able to match their manager’s ambitions and if he manages to win Spurs an elusive trophy come the end of the campaign.
