Tottenham reveal their transfer plans after losing Guglielmo Vicario to ankle surgery
Tottenham Hotspur’s plans for the campaign have been thrown into turmoil after first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was ruled out for months with a fractured ankle.
The Italian has undergone surgery to his right fractured ankle sustained during Spurs’ impressive 4-0 Premier League drubbing of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. He picked up the knock around the half-hour mark, and despite the injury, he completed the full game, making a series of impressive saves.
Now, the player’s condition has ruled him out indefinitely, and the North London outfit have yet to provide an official recovery timeline. However, Spurs fear they will be without Guglielmo Vicario for ‘months’ and are already looking at potential replacements in the New Year.
According to a report from talkSPORT, Tottenham will consider signing a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window owing to Vicario’s lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Upon arriving from Empoli in June last year, Vicario has established himself as the undisputed No.1 at White Hart Lane. The 28-year-old had yet to miss a single minute of Premier League action in the Lilywhites’ colours, playing all 38 games last season and each of the 12 league matches so far in 2024/25.
The Italy international has missed just four games since arriving at the Hotspur Way—none of them in the Premier League. Veteran Fraser Forster has deputised on all four occasions and he is now likely to come into his side as cover.
The 36-year-old Forster has barely featured in the top flight, not starting a single league game so far this season. He has played in the Europa League, though, keeping one clean sheet and conceding three goals in two games. Thus, Daniel Levy and Spurs are unlikely to take a gamble on Forster and are considering whether to dip in the transfer market in January for a new glovesman.

Spurs have been linked with a move for highly-rated LOSC Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier this month. The 23-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most promising goalkeepers in world football, was called up to the France squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures in the recently concluded international break, highlighting his rise in stature.
Whether Levy splashes the cash on Chevalier in the mid-season trading period remains to be seen. With Vicario out for some time, our club must prioritise signing the Lille goalkeeper as we cannot rely on the ageing Forster to cover all the games across various competitions.
