Son Heung-Min injury fears take a backseat as Tottenham star makes international return.

Son Heung-min scored in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-2 draw with AS Roma in the Europa League

Tottenham Hotspur were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by AS Roma at home in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

After taking the lead early on in the game through a Son Heung-min penalty, Spurs were pegged back by Roma via Evan Ndicka.

However, Brennan Johnson made it 2-1 with a low finish to continue what has been a productive season, before Mats Hummels equalised in the dying minutes to leave Ange Postecoglou and the Tottenham Hotspur faithful exasperated. The result left Tottenham ninth in the Europa League table with three games still to go.

Son gave Tottenham an early lead against Roma via penalty.

It was Son Heung-min who got the ball rolling for the home side as early as the fifth minute, converting a penalty expertly past goalkeeper Mile Svilar after Pape Matar Sarr was fouled inside the Roma box. With injuries aplenty, Spurs are left short in different areas of the pitch especially out wide.

Yet, Son continues to be a reliable outlet for goals for the Lilywhites. It was just the South Korea’s fourth goal across all competitions in what has been a disruptive 2024/25 season. He also had a chance to double his tally against Roma but his shot sailed over the bar.

When asked if the 32-year-old is lacking confidence at this moment, Ange Postecoglou said in his post-match presser (h/t Football London):

“I don’t know if he’s lacking confidence. Sonny’s had a disrupted year for us, so that doesn’t help. Yeah, he had some good chances tonight to get the goal and he’s getting in those areas. Look, he’s got the quality to take those chances and we know he’s done it consistently for almost a decade, but he’s had a disrupted season being in and out. You can see he is getting back to full fitness now, which is the main thing for us.”

Big Ange would have been frustrated with his side’s 2-2 draw with Roma.

Indeed, Son has endured a stop-start campaign due to hamstring and thigh issues. These issues have limited the forward to 13 appearances across all competitions, with Postecoglou taking him off early in the last few games to manage his fitness. The South Korean is now at the ripe age of 32, and his body has to be managed well, especially after a disruptive opening few months of the season.

Nonetheless, Son remains the club’s best finisher and Big Ange is responsible for protecting him.
