Danny Murphy thinks Liam Delap could be Harry Kane's successor at Tottenham.

Liam Delap has hit the ground running right away in his first proper season as a first-choice forward for a Premier League side. And one former Premier League player thinks he has already seen enough to declare the young English as a potential great.

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has backed Liam Delap to be able to emulate Harry Kane‘s heroics were he to move to Tottenham.

In a recent appearance on the BBC’s Match of the Day, Murphy had this to say regarding the 21-year-old’s potential in comparison to the Premier League double centurion.

“I’d probably go as far to say that for me he’s [Delap] the obvious long-term successor to Harry Kane. I think he’s the best young English striker out there.

“I know he’s got a bit to learn and wisdom comes with experience and game time in this league but he’s got all the attributes to be a top international player.

“I just don’t see a weakness for him. He’s scored enough goals in a struggling side. He gets a lot of chances he’ll score more. He’s just got that lovely balance between physical and technical, rarely you get both. He’s a super talent.”

Indeed, Delap, who is in his first season at Portman Road having moved from Man City last summer for €17.85 million, has already become a mainstay in the starting XI.

The 21-year-old has six goals and an assist in the Premier League this season from 12 appearances.

Delap has also been linked to a move to Tottenham in recent weeks, with Arsenal and Man City also lurking around the England U21 international.

Valued by Transfermarkt at €15 million, Delap has at Ipswich a £20k-per-week contract set to run until June 2029.

A replacement for Harry Kane?

Maybe?

Whether Delap joins Spurs depends entirely on how much the club would want him in the first place and what aspect of Kane’s game they would want him to emulate.

Because if it’s the Bayern Munich forward’s longevity, one must ask the point of buying in the first place an in-prime striker like Dominic Solanke, whom one must expect to at least be at the top of his game for the next half-decade, which immediately undercuts Tottenham’s need for buying a forward that would want minutes right away.

More Tottenham News:

Delap’s unquestionably of a similar mould as Kane and has the ability to go to the very top, but given the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle are interested in him among other clubs, and these two are the sides where he’ll be more needed than at Spurs, it looks unlikely a Lilywhite move would materialise or is even needed here.
