Tottenham star ready to end North London stay; ‘no negotiation’ on the cards

Tottenham could give Sergio Reguilon payoff to terminate contract.

Tottenham are keen to offload Sergio Reguilon

Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon has been sidelined from Ange Postecoglou’s squad since the start of the season.

The Spaniard has spent more than four years with Spurs, though has only actually featured for them in two of the five seasons since. He played fairly consistently in his first two campaigns in North London, and not at all since.

The defender has not seen a single minute of competitive action since returning to White Hart Lane from his loan spell at Brentford, where he spent the second half of last season. Before that, he spent the opening six months of 2023/24 on loan with Manchester United.

The 27-year-old is clearly not in the plans of Ange Postecoglou and wants to leave Tottenham in 2025 to revive his career. The club want him out as well. All that remains now is to find a new employer.

Recent reports have suggested that Sergio Reguilon may choose to terminate his contract altogether in order to get a new club. The Madrid-born star’s current deal at Spurs runs out at the end of the season (Transfermarkt). Thus, any money the Lilywhites can get in exchange for him at this point would be a bonus.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley recently revealed that Tottenham could think of reaching a mutual contract termination agreement with Reguilon to move him off their books. Now, ex-scout Bryan King expects the full-back/wing-back to accept a big payoff from Tottenham to terminate his contract with the club in January. He feels it will be the North London club who would set the termination terms, not the player.

“He [Reguilon] is the one who wants it terminated,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.

“Therefore, if he wants to get away as bad as he says he does, Tottenham’s offer will be accepted, and it will be goodbye. He won’t get his full salary that is for sure, he will get a third of it.

“As soon as he leaves at the beginning of January, he is free to go and join another club. He will be told what he is going to get, and that is what he will accept. There is no negotiation here.”

At the beginning of January, Reguilon will have almost six months left on his contract with Spurs. The Spanish international is on a £53k-per-week contract, so should he decide to accept one-third of that, Reguilon will still be walking with a decent payoff. As he will become a free agent, Reguilon will be free to choose the next chapter of his career with Spanish and Turkish clubs vying for his signature.

The Lilywhites have been keen to offload Reguilón and free up salary space for potential new signings. As they look to strengthen their ranks in January, offloading Reguilon’s £53k-per-week wages could be a crucial step in making room for reinforcements.

However, from the club’s point of view, they will be incurring a big financial loss and that is something Danie Levy and Co. must learn moving forward.
