Dejan Kulusevski continued his decent form this season by picking up an assist during Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Roma in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
The Sweden international’s club football tally for the season now stands at nine goal contributions in 19 appearances across all competitions.
After the game, the 24-year-old addressed the biggest elephant in the Tottenham room at the moment.
Dejan Kulusevski hints at in-house Guglielmo Vicario solution
Speaking to the media after his side’s 2-2 draw against Roma in the Europa League, Dejan Kulusevski expressed his belief in Tottenham’s third-choice goalkeeper Brandon Austin to be able to come into the starting line-up in the absence of Guglielmo Vicario.
“He’s [Fraser Forster] really good and he made some big saves today [Thursday]. It’s great to have him and I think he’s ready to play.
“And I also feel confident that we have Brandon Austin, who’s a very good goalkeeper.
“We miss Vicario because he’s a fantastic guy, but now it is time for Fraser to step up and help the team.”
Kulusevski on Vicario, Forster, and Austin, as quoted by TBR Football.
Tottenham have confirmed that Vicario will be unavailable for months, having undergone surgery on his broken ankle which he sustained during the game against Man City and still continued to play for over an hour.
For Tottenham’s youth sides, Austin has made 79 appearances in total, keeping 13 clean sheets. Spurs have also been linked with EFL Championship goalkeepers Anthony Patterson and James Trafford over January moves.
Austin needs to be given a chance
If Ange Postecoglou intends to find out whether both his backup goalies are up to the challenge, this is it. Forster has shown enough deficiency in his game for Austin to be given a chance.
At 25, the former United States U18 international ought to receive at least one shot between the sticks before Vicario’s return, otherwise, both he and Tottenham will need to evaluate their marriage come the end of this season. For now, both Forster and Austin have an opportunity to make their case. Whether they will do enough to be the solution remains to be seen.
