‘Happiness business’- Tottenham boss makes concerning remark on senior star’s role in the team

Tottenham boss speaks out on James Maddison's exclusion from England squad.

Ange Postecoglou responds to question on James Maddison’s role at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison scored twice against Manchester City to set the team on its course to a 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium. The Englishman had a birthday to remember and silenced his critics with a match-winning display last weekend, although the recent trend regarding his involvement in the starting eleven has cast doubts over his continuity at the club.

His positive display against City was not rewarded with a start against AS Roma in the midweek Europa League match, which raised a number of eyebrows. Ange Postecoglou was not questioned about Maddison immediately after the draw against the Serie A giants though he was quizzed regarding the midfielder in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Fulham game.

The Australian was quoted saying the following words by The Guardian.

“Yeah, I get that [Maddison was unhappy] but at the same time, I’m not in the happiness business. They are all here to help us be successful whether you’re playing or not because sometimes when you come on for 10 minutes you can help us change a course of our season.”

While it is hard to argue with Postecoglou closing out his statement by hinting at players needing just a cameo to impact the outcome of the entire season, James Maddison is far better a player than to spend his prime years on the bench, not least at a club like Tottenham where he is head and shoulders above several other options.

If indeed he were to depart the club for good sooner or later, there would be no shortage of suitors vying for his signing and solely from the player’s perspective, his career might actually go on an upward trajectory as there are chances of him joining a Champions League playing side along with a realistic chance of winning trophies, both of which prospects seem unlikely at Tottenham.

Postecoglou’s remarks raise concerns regarding how much exactly he values Maddison though he will not be allowed to leave the club in the winter, if at all.
