Jamie Carragher makes Tottenham point as he reviews potential red card incident in latest Liverpool clash

With nearly a third of the Premier League season completed, the table is beginning to take shape. Tottenham, true to their inconsistent form, prepare to host Fulham at N17, aiming for a much-needed win as they sit at 8th place, well outside the Champions League spots. Reflecting on his pre-season predictions, Jamie Carragher admitted on Sky Sports that he had misjudged a few things as often as ever, offering a revised outlook on the current campaign.

At the start of the season, Jamie Carragher backed Manchester City to clinch the Premier League title, but with Liverpool currently leading the charge, his prediction looks shaky. He also initially placed Manchester United in fifth but has since admitted that was a misstep. Carragher now believes Tottenham will secure fifth place instead, reflecting on their potential despite their inconsistency.

Jamie Carragher changes Tottenham prediction

Jamie Carragher has shifted his prediction for the Premier League’s fifth spot, now backing Tottenham Hotspur to claim the position over Manchester United, who he believes are far from contention.

While Spurs’ inconsistency may leave them just shy of a top-four finish, Carragher notes that fifth place could still secure Champions League football. Under UEFA’s revamped format, an additional Champions League spot could go to nations with high coefficients, and England currently sits second in the rankings. With strong performances from English clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal in Europe, there’s a real chance England could benefit from this rule.

Additionally, Tottenham have a second pathway to the Champions League through the Europa League. With Spurs on track to reach the knockout stages, winning the competition would guarantee their spot in next season’s Champions League, regardless of their league position.

Speaking in sky sport’s premier league segment, Carragher regretted having United to finish fifth

“Now in fifth place, this is the biggest mistake I’ve made in my predictions. I had Manchester United in fifth place in my predictions. I don’t think there’s a chance United finish in fifth position,”

“I’d be very surprised if they finish in the top six. I’m going to go for Tottenham. I’ve said that Tottenham will miss out on the Champions League positions with Chelsea going in there. I’m going to put Tottenham in fifth position.”

Despite Tottenham’s ongoing inconsistency, the club will be aiming for a top-four finish this season. However, even if they fall short of securing a Champions League spot through the league, they still have a chance to qualify via the Europa League. As their manager has previously stated, he tends to win trophies in his second season, so Spurs fans can be optimistic about a top-four finish next season—especially if the club makes smart investments in the upcoming winter transfer window.
