“No alternative”- Ange Postecoglou will not let heads drop as Tottenham prepare for ‘big’ run of games

Ange Postecoglou set to hand his Tottenham Hotspur stars a holiday following Wolves draw.

Tottenham were beaten 4-3 by London rivals Chelsea after being 2-0 up

Question marks over Tottenham Hotspur’s mentality remain after they threw a 2-0 lead against Chelsea at home on Sunday.

Spurs raced to an early two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski. However, Ange Postecoglou’s side capitulated once Cristian Romero went off injured, leaking four goals in an abysmal defensive display.

Goals from Jadon Sancho, Enzo Fernandez and a double from Cole Palmer made strikes from Solanke, Kulusevski and Son Heung-min of no use. Ange Postecoglou would have been absolutely livid watching his side concede four goals and lose the game after going 2-0 up at home. Chelsea dominated possession and controlled large parts of the game, showing their supremacy over Tottenham in all departments.

It was Spurs’ second defeat in a row after losing 1-0 to Bournemouth away last week. The result has seen the Lilywhites drop to 11th in the table, leaving Postecoglou in a spot of bother.

Addressing the media after the game, the Tottenham boss was asked about his approach in the coming weeks where games are set to come thick and fast. He said (h/t BBC):

“You have no alternative and have to keep going. There is no other path we can take and we just have to keep showing up. The bit that was disappointing was that we showed the kind of team we can be, because they are a top side and we had the better of them but then unfortunately we are dealing with major disruptions. We have to keep persevering.

“We have got to see what the health of the squad is. We are a bit thin and have some long term ones. Between now and January there are some big games.”

Two draws and as many defeats in the last four games across all competitions means Big Ange’s men have failed to build on their huge 4-0 win at Manchester City a few weeks ago.

It is true that the squad has been decimated by injuries to key performers and Big Ange lost Romero to another injury on Sunday, but there are no excuses for surrendering a healthy 2-0 goal lead after such a fantastic start to the game.

For the Greek-born tactician, the frustration is obvious. Back-to-back defeats to Bournemouth and Chelsea have dented Spurs’ hopes of being in the top four. The North Londoners are not in a great moment currently, and the players must show leadership, mentality, and resilience to dig themselves out of the hole.

Next up for Tottenham is a trip to Scotland to face Rangers in the Europa League, and Big Ange—certain to receive a chorus of boos and jeers from the Ibrox faithful when he walks towards the dugout thanks to his previous links with Celtic—will least expect a stirring response from his boys.
