Ange Postecoglou given a stern reality check about his Tottenham future

Ange Postecoglou 'hurt' by Tottenham Hotspur's draw vs Wolves but refuses to throw in the towel.

Postecoglou told to be more tactically flexible amidst Tottenham struggles

Tottenham Hotspur’s recent defeat at the hands of Chelsea has raised a number of question marks about the team, not least about Ange Postecoglou, as the team sits in the bottom half of the table with no real signs of a resurgent run due to come. A few more matches without victory could see the Australian’s tenure come to a premature end.

And while it is debatable whether or not the manager deserves time, one can ill-afford to point fingers at the board if he is winless for in as many as six matches out of the seven. Some of the decisions, like starting elevens and substitutions have raised eyebrows with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher also being astounded by Postecoglou’s one-dimensional approach to things.

London World quoted the former Liverpool defender saying the following words about the Tottenham coach’s tactical stubbornness.

“There’s this idea of playing a pure game and the Tottenham fans singing ‘We’ve got our Tottenham back’ but you won’t win anything, you won’t challenge. I wake up every morning hoping the sun is shining, so I can put some shorts and a T-shirt on but if it’s raining, you put your coat on. You can’t have this idea about playing one way, it won’t work. If it doesn’t change, he won’t be here next season.”

With the way Tottenham’s recent matches have been going, it is hard to not point a finger at Ange Postecoglou given how frail the team has looked. There seems like a lack of chemistry across departments, whereas the defending has been especially poor with gaps being easily exploited by the opponents.

The offensive unit has also not clicked as it has usually been ridden on individual brilliance from the likes of Brennan Johnson, Dominic Solanke or Dejan Kulusevski. Apart from wins against Manchester City and Aston Villa in last month or so, it is incredibly hard to remember a Tottenham performance in the Premier League in which every single player has excelled in his duties.

Carragher’s opinions are usually controversial, but this time around, it is hard to disagree with him. Postecoglou, like every good coach in the world, needs to find a plan B if Spurs are to find any success in what remains of the season. Otherwise, the Australian is ticking his own time bomb and knowing Daniel Levy, another tough decision could be made sooner rather than later.
