Tottenham transfer boost as midfield ace plots Barcelona exit

Tottenham vs Liverpool: Carabao Cup Match Preview.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to sign a midfielder in the upcoming 2025 transfer intervals as Ange Postecoglou looks to add quality and depth to his roster in the middle of the park, and Daniel Levy has reportedly identified Barcelona maestro Frenkie de Jong as a potential target for the Lilywhites.

The North Londoners have been thin in midfield, especially with the departure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso, and they have been seeking some quality on the pitch as the Australian head coach looks to solidify his side’s bid for a possible Champions League qualification despite a slow start to the 2024/25 season.

Spurs pursuit of Frenkie de Jong will not come as easy given interests from Manchester United and Chelsea. However, in what comes as a boost to all his suitors, the Dutchman does not want to remain at Barcelona, per a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, which states that the relationship of the player with the Catalonia-based club has turned bitter.

For Tottenham, Frenkie de Jong will be a statement signing, with De Jong’s technical ability, vision, and experience in Europe being a significant upgrade to the current midfield at White Hart Lane. This will offer Postecoglou not only more options but also flexibility as the former Celtic manager looks to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League’s top spots.

It is to be seen how this transfer materialises in the upcoming few months.
