Wenham expresses delight at Ben Davies’ possible extension at Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has proven his utility as a squad player yet again by stepping into the central defender’s position to reasonably good measure after injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. The long-time servant’s contract in north London, however, comes to an end following the conclusion of the ongoing campaign.
The Athletic had claimed very recently that Tottenham are expected to prolong Davies’ contract by another year. There was not much information about the financial effects Spurs would have to bear by triggering their extension option in the Welshman’s deal, though Tottenham insider John Wenham has given his green light to the deal.
He was quoted saying the following in an interaction with Tottenham Hotspur News.
“I’m delighted with that decision. Davies is perfectly reliable whenever he plays for us, he rarely lets the team down. In addition, he’s on relatively low money for a top-six Premier League footballer. He can play both as a left-back and centre-back and you never hear any bad stories about him. He doesn’t kick up a fuss when he doesn’t play, he is well-liked, trains well and is a homegrown player. No reason why his deal shouldn’t be extended.”
There are a couple of different ways to look at it from an emotional as well as logical point of view.
On the former part, it is perhaps fair to say that Davies has been a loyal member of the Tottenham Hotspur squad and deserves to bid farewell on his own terms. Spurs are only doing justice to him by extending his contract for another year, after which the situation will be reevaluated subject to the player’s performances and in accordance with how the club’s planned squad rebuilding goes.
Logically speaking, now would be the perfect time to part ways with Davies as Spurs need to start looking towards the future. The 31-year-old’s stay could not only jeopardise Luka Vuskovic’s development once he checks in next year, but may also see the club’s waste its resources, like they arguably are on Son after his contract extension till 2026 in spite of his struggles with form and fitness.

With Spurs unilaterally having the prerogative of extending Ben Davies’ contract, there is little more that can be said about their decision apart from perhaps questioning it. On a related note, Ange Postecoglou will hope that the board still brings him a new and younger defender or two, and that he is not forced to work with an ageing squad which is being tasked with masking Daniel Levy’s incompetence.
