Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has gone from bad to worse in recent weeks as Ange Postecoglou’s position at the club has come under intense scrutiny.

After their 1-0 loss to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, where the Spurs gaffer was serenaded with boos from the travelling fans, the Lilywhites lost 4-3 to cross-town rivals Chelsea at home on Sunday. This led to the club slipping to 11th in the standings and are now seven points adrift of the UEFA Champions League spots.

The defeat marked the North London side’ fourth consecutive game without a win in all competitions, and it means Ange Postecoglou and Co. have managed just a single victory in the last seven outings. With Tottenham regressing this season, firm questions are being asked of Postecoglou’s future at the club.

Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge has conceded that Big Ange is under no immediate pressure of being sacked at Tottenham. The Greek-Aussie enjoys a harmonious relationship with CEO Daniel Levy and is not expected to be booted out anytime soon, with the club wary of persistent injury issues playing a big part in the wretched run of results.

“Ange Postecoglou is currently under no pressure at Tottenham Hotspur. He enjoys a good working relationship with Daniel Levy,” Michael Bridge told Sky Sports News.

“Now there’ll be Spurs fans and non-Spurs fans shouting at me on the TV, saying, we’ve heard this all before at Spurs.

“It’s a bit different this time, though. There is an acknowledgment that there’s been a number of serious injuries this season that have derailed Spurs a bit and that this project is going to take some time.”

‘Frustrating’ injury problems have hampered Tottenham’s performances this season.

Tottenham’s loss on Sunday was particularly painful, as they showed promise but were undone by defensive lapses as Chelsea outclassed them. The varying performance levels and results have irked fans, some of whom have turned on the head coach. He has the backing of the board for now, and it is unfair to say the 59-year-old is solely to blame.

Defensive injuries, including Cristian Romero being forced off with a quad problem against Chelsea and subsequently ruled out for six weeks, have left the backline susceptible. The forward line has been thin for some time now owing to the absences of Richarlison, Odobert and Moore.

The next few games will be pivotal in deciding Big Ange’s fate at N17. Before taking on basement club Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday, Spurs will travel to Ibrox to face Rangers in the Europa League in midweek. Big Ange has to win these two games to earn some breather.
