21-year-old Tottenham loanee to be handed second lease to life in North London next January

Tottenham Hotspur have multiple highly regarded starlets within the ranks at Hotspur Way, and that brings further responsibility to ensure the development of those young players, and one of those players that has high potential is Matthew Craig.

Matthew Craig moved to Barnsley on a season-long loan deal in the previous summer window following a commendable loan spell with Doncaster Rovers. And the 21-year-old has so far made 15 outings for his temporary employers this season; however, he has found himself out of favour at Oakwell of late, and that has persuaded Spurs to consider recalling the player, per Football Insider, with multiple EFL sides wanting to sign the player in the winter window.

To put his absence from Barnsley into perspective, Craig has been an unused sub in each of their last 5 League One games, which saw them slip out of the playoff places.

The 21-year-old is a defensive midfielder, albeit he is well equipped to play in a more advanced midfield role.

This strategy of youth development will see a consistent stream of players coming out of the Hotspur Way academy; however, Daniel Levy and his chiefs will have to ensure that their progress requires arrangements with regard to loans, as in Craig’s case — lack of regular football at Barnsley could hinder his growth, and at the moment a probable winter recall looks like a logical step, especially if the North Londoners find a suitable club willing to offer him the playing time.

When the January transfer window comes around, it could provide a fresh start for the 21-year-old, and meanwhile, Spurs will need to balance their long-term vision for Craig with the immediate plan that can aid his development.
