Tottenham Hotspur endured another disappointing outing as the North Londoners drew 1-1 against Rangers in the Europa League yesterday, and the Lilywhites boss, Ange Postecoglou, went on to criticise Timo Werner in his postgame press conference, which has got mixed reactions.
The RB Leipzig loanee had an underwhelming first half, which was described as “honking” by former Scottish international Tam McManus, and the Australian head coach took off the German international for eventual goal scorer Dejan Kulusevski at halftime.
Dan Bardell questions Postecoglou approach with Werner comments
Following the conclusion of the fixture in Glasgow, the former Celtic boss called out the 28-year-old in his postgame presser, insisting that the Werner’s performance was “not acceptable.” And Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell is of the opinion that it was strange for Ange to call out the 28-year-old after points were shared last night.
He goes on to claim that it was bizarre for the 59-year-old and insists that it will not end positively for Postecoglou.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Bardell said:
“Spurs have got attacking players missing, so they need Werner at the moment. That’s why I thought it was strange to call him out, especially given that he’s a confidence player.
“It was strange that Postecoglou would use this time when they’re very up and down themselves to call a player out.
“He’s a player who needs rhythm and games, and he doesn’t get that at Spurs, which makes it more difficult for him. I thought it was strange from Postecoglou; I’m not sure what there was to gain from him doing that.“
We rarely find managers being so direct about their players in the press conference, and while Ange may be looking to push Werner to improve, getting a skim down in the public for a confidence-based player may have consequences.

By the looks of it, the 28-year-old may soon call curtains to his career at White Hart Lane; however, does that warrant public criticism like Ange Postecoglou did? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
