Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to bring in a new central defender among the ranks at White Hart Lane given Ange Postecoglou’s lack of depth at the heart of defence, and the Australian head coach has reportedly asked the chiefs at Hotspur Way to pay the release clause for La Liga star Omar Alderete, per AS (as replayed by Sport Witness).
The 27-year-old Paraguayan defender has been subject to wide links surrounding a move to N17, given Antena2’s bold claims suggesting that Alderete is joining the North Londoners in the winter transfer window.
Omar Alderete – a filler signing or something more?
The Lilywhites are in dire need of a new defender given the struggles in the ongoing campaign with the consistent injuries to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, and now Spurs could land Alderete as they plan to activate his €16m release clause.
The lack of depth in the heart of defence has left Postecoglou’s side vulnerable at the back, and Danie Levy will look to resolve the depth problems in the upcoming window, where a probable move for Alderete could address Spurs frailties with availability concerns of Micky van de Ven and Romero.
Now for many supporters, they would see a move for the 27-year-old as a filler for the ongoing campaign till Tottenham can revisit the position and seek a rather big-name transfer in his position in the summer transfer window. Moreover, alternatively, the North Londoners are also linked with a £50m move to secure the Ukrainian defender Illia Zabarnyi.
Looking at this from a pure quality perspective, any transfer for Illia Zabarnyi makes more sense on paper given the Ukrainian’s experience in the English top tier combined with his antics over the past year or so. Moreover, Alderete will not only need some time to settle in at White Hart Lane but also would take up unwanted space in the dressing room at Hotspur Way if Daniel Levy goes on and brings another centre-half in the succeeding summer transfer window.
