“Levy won’t like to…” – Club insider thinks Spurs ace has been put under scrutiny behind the scenes

Tottenham Hotspur central defender Cristian Romero has played some substandard games in the ongoing 2024/25 campaign, especially given his elite reputation that got him links with a move to Real Madrid. The Argentine has barely looked at his best, and injury problems have compounded his bad performances on the pitch—though problems don’t stop there, as the 26-year-old’s words have now piled up against him.

Former Atalanta centre-back made comments about being unhappy with the transfers that his current employers made, and these words brought ample surprise and criticism from pundits and fans alike.

Romero in trouble?

While Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou apologised for his comments, John Wenham, owner of the reputed podcast Lilywhite Rose, insists that the comments would have been badly received behind the scenes.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Wenham said:

“Those comments would have been badly received behind the scenes. Levy won’t like to receive criticism. Postecoglou said that Romero had apologised, so he was obviously told that what he said wasn’t acceptable.

“However, good for him. This is somebody who, for good or bad, sees himself as a big player. Therefore, when a lot of people are pointing fingers in one direction, perhaps it is time for those people to take a look at themselves.”

Coming a bit candid, Romero’s comments will divide opinion; some fans would appreciate him for calling for higher standards and being rigid about it (that is what it takes if the club is to compete for silverware), and for others it would be seen as disruptive.

You can pick sides, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Argentine will now be under scrutiny behind the scenes, and the Argentine will need to use this incident as motivation to return to his best form and prove why he is regarded as one of the most talented defenders in world football.
