Djed Spence finally got his long-awaited Premier League debut in Tottenham Hotspur colours in the Lilywhites 5-0 win over Southampton last night, and it is fair to say that the 24-year-old played impressively, delivering an assist in the first minute and helping the North Londoners secure an all-important clean sheet.
The former Middlesbrough star has come a long way; he moved to White Hart Lane a couple of years back and has since struggled for consistent opportunities at N17, and he had one foot out the door in the summer transfer window. Though an exit move fell through, he went on to impress Ange Postecoglou in the preseason, and now he is starting in the Premier League donning the Spurs badge—Spence has come a long way in a matter of months.
Djed Spence impresses on Premier League debut Spurs colours

Ange Postecoglou replaced a fatigued Pedro Porro with Spence in the starting lineup (and also maybe owing to the defensive stability that Spence brings over Porro). And while he was forced to shift to the left flank owing to Destiny Udogie’s injury, Spence played a strong game, and the Australian head coach was all praises following the conclusion of the game.
Ange praised the patience of the 24-year-old fullback, saying (via. BBC):
“He has had to bide his time. To be fair to him, whenever he has played, he has done well. We haven’t been able to give him too much game time because full-back is one of the positions we have a bit of cover in, but we needed him to come in and play at a good level, and he did. It’s a credit to him.”
Spence would be hoping to build on this and find himself a part of the starting eleven more often given how impressive he has been and with the injury problems that Tottenham is suffering from; decent qualitative depth in a position feels like an invaluable asset.
