Tottenham Hotspur have a need to bring in a new goalkeeper given the current dynamics of the department, and the Lilywhites could be looking to dip into the market in the upcoming winter transfer window.
The Lilywhites have been actively looking for a young goalkeeper in the EFL Championship ahead of the January transfer window, per the latest by transfer insider Pete O’Rourke on Football Insider, given Guglielmo Vicario’s long-term injury owing to a fractured ankle. But Daniel Levy and Spurs are not thinking of immediate needs; they are ready to prioritise reinforcements that will bring depth and quality in the long term.
Tottenham target young goalkeeper to bolster depth amid injury concerns
Vicario’s injury has had a domino effect on 36-year-old Fraser Forster, who has been slotted into a starting role between the woodworks, and given that former Southampton goalie has been putting in some solid performances, there is a growing need for Spurs to bring in someone young and more of a long-term solution that can not only provide competition but also eventually replace Vicario as the first-choice keeper (this is where Tottenham’s links with Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein made so much sense).
The report further states two names that the Lilywhites are looking at: Anthony Patterson of Sunderland and Man City academy graduate James Trafford (right now at Burnley).
Spurs approach to bringing in a young goalkeeper is in line with the transfer strategy backed by young additions that Daniel Levy has stuck to of late, and both the aforementioned options could not only address the immediate needs but also be reliable options for years to come.
