Son Heung-min ready to trade something very special to win a trophy with Tottenham this season

Son Heung-min is desperate to lift a trophy with Tottenham this season

It has been a stop-start season for Tottenham Hotspur skipper Son Heung-min.

Injury problems have limited the South Korean international’s participation to 18 appearances across all competitions, where he has registered six goals and as many assists. Due to him picking up injuries of late, Ange Postecoglou has had to manage his game time accordingly and keep his captain fresh.

On Sunday, Spurs travelled to the St Mary’s Stadium to take on rock-bottom Premier League side Southampton. Ange Postecoglou’s side were on a five-game winless run heading into the game. However, they bounced back to winning ways in emphatic fashion, thrashing the listless Saints 5-0. And Son Heung-min would have been proud to lead that Tottenham side on the night.

Son Heung-min is Tottenham’s highest assist-getter in the Premier League

The 32-year-old played a crucial role in Spurs’ big victory on the South Coast, scoring once and assisting twice before the gaffer decided to take him off at half time and wrap him up in cotton wool. He led from the front and after supplying two assists at Southampton, the versatile forward became the highest assist provider in the Premier League (68) for Tottenham than any other player in the competition’s history.

Son is desperate to win a trophy with the Lilywhites this season and says he would trade all his assists and goals to lift silverware in North London. Into his tenth campaign at White Hart Lane, the experienced forward is raring to end the club’s 16-year-long trophy drought this time around. The South Korean star admitted he is proud to become the highest assist supplier in the Premier League for Tottenham but remains hungry to achieve more at the club.

“I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved for this club but I’m still hungry, I still want to always improve. If I could change one thing for a trophy it would definitely be this. I think everybody deserves this, the club deserve it, the fans deserve it, so we are working on it,” Son told the club’s official website.

“Let’s be together at the moment, it’s not important to talk about individual stuff, I’m very proud of course think everybody has to work towards one aim.”

Big Ange would have been delighted to see his skipper Son Heung-min regain some form against Southampton

Son has been on the receiving end of ample criticism this campaign, especially from ex-midfielder Jamie O’Hara, who thinks the player isn’t world-class anymore. It is true that his powers are waning but he rolled back the years against Southampton with a fantastic all-around display.

The native from Chuncheon-si has entered the final six months of his contract at the club (Transfermarkt), but the North Londoners do have the option to extend his stay by another 12 months. For now, however, Son’s focus will be to get back to his peak fitness levels and consistently make assists and score goals.
