Tottenham set to draw up a list of potential goalkeeper targets to replace Fraser Forster
Lack of depth has been one of the things that has troubled Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou’s squad mightily this season.
With Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven spending time on the sidelines, the shortage of options in the backline has forced Ange Postecoglou to use 18-year-old Archie Gray as a makeshift centre-back. And owing to this lack of depth, the 59-year-old has been actively looking to bring in a new central defender in January.
Moving onto the goalkeeping department, with first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on the sidelines following ankle surgery last month, veteran Fraser Forster has to step in. While Fraser Forster has performed well of late, he is set to enter the final six months of his contract at White Hart Lane (Transfermarkt) and the club appear concerned about it.
According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are planning to recruit a second-choice goalkeeper in the coming months. Postecoglou is working with technical director Johan Lange to address one of the vital positions in the squad.
The Lilywhites are beginning their hunt for a new goalkeeper who is capable of providing fresh competition for Guglielmo Vicario, whose timeline for return from injury isn’t yet clear. The Italian’s injury has seen Forster benefit with some regular minutes in between the sticks and the veteran has stepped up with some crucial moments in every game he has played recently.
However, the ex-England international is out of contract at the end of the season, and the aforementioned report adds there are no long-term plans for the veteran to operate as Vicario’s backup. This has led to goalkeepers from clubs across Europe, the United States and Brazil being considered by the Hotspur Way chiefs.
Big Ange is going to stick with his initial plan of backing Forster and ignore the lure of signing a new glovesman in the 2025 transfer intervals. This means Spurs’ transfer recruitment strategy ahead of the February 3 transfer deadline remains intact thanks to young Brandon Austin providing cover for Forster.
