Getafe defender Omar Alderete has been linked with a move to Tottenham
Tottenham strengthened their midfield and forward line during the summer transfer window, but didn’t focus on improving the depth of their defensive ranks.
That decision has come back to bite the Hotspur Way chiefs, with Ange Postecoglou currently struggling to cope without injured centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. Ben Davies, who has largely been used as a centre-back, is also unavailable due to a hamstring problem, forcing Ange Postecoglou to use teenager Archie Gray alongside Radu Dragusin at the heart of Spurs’ rearguard.
Tottenham’s lack of depth in central defence has been exposed during this busy fixture schedule, and as a result, signing a defender has to be on the club’s agenda in the forthcoming winter transfer window.

Getafe defender Omar Alderete has emerged as a potential target for Tottenham. The Paraguayan defender joined Getafe permanently in 2023 after a successful loan spell. He has impressed in La Liga with his mix of physical attributes and technical skills on the ball.
Perhaps this has caught the attention of Tottenham, who are in dire need of defensive reinforcements following Romero and Van de Ven’s injury problems. This has left the Lilywhites on the back foot, and the alarming lack of depth calls for new additions in this position.
Getafe president Angel Torres addressed speculation surrounding Omar Alderete earlier this week, ruling out a January move for the centre-back.
“The fans can rest assured that Alderete will be here until June. He is happy. We are not going to touch the goal, defence and midfield unless someone pays the clause,” Angel Torres said to Spanish outlet Marca.

Torres’ recent comments on Alderete comes as a blow for Spurs. The South American has been a regular for the Spanish side this season and his contract expires in the summer of 2028 (Transfermarkt). He has a €16m release clause in his contract, which Tottenham have to pay in full in order to stand any chance of persuading Getafe into selling their prized defensive asset next month.

The 27-year-old’s style of play certainly aligns with Big Ange’s preference for aggressive, front-footed defenders who are robust and can progress the ball without much fuss. Alderete would have certainly been a more than strong backup for Romero, who has had a few injury issues this term.

Following the Getafe president’s latest comments on the Paraguayan international, unfortunately, we will now have to look elsewhere to possibly strengthen the central defence for at least the second half of the campaign.
