Tottenham goalkeeper Fraser Forster had a forgettable night against Man United in the Carabao Cup
Tottenham beat Manchester United 4-3 in the Carabao Cup on a Thursday night where horrific goalkeeping howlers and defensive mistakes dictated a pulsating tie.
It was a calamitous night for both goalkeepers Fraser Forster and Altay Bayindir. A Dominic Solanke brace and Dejan Kulusevski’s strike saw Spurs earn a commanding three-goal lead within 54 minutes before Fraser Forster committed two howlers in a short space of time. Goals from substitutes Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo allowed Man United to claw their way back into the game.
Skipper Son Heung-min scored directly from a corner, with Bayindir allowing the ball to sail over him and his defence and into the net after failing to punch it amid claims that substitute Lucas Bergvall obstructed the Man United shot-stopper.

Jonny Evans made it 4-3 in the fifth minute of stoppage time with a glancing header, which turned out to be a mere consolation for Ruben Amorim’s side, as Tottenham ran out victors on home soil.
Fraser Forster’s catastrophic mistakes resulted in chaos in a game that was heading in just one direction. The experienced glovesman was caught napping and his poor pass across the goal was intercepted by Bruno Fernandes, who squared it for Zirkzee to tap in home from close range. Minutes later, he was found guilty once again, as Amad Diallo closed him down and slid the ball into the back of the net as the Spurs goalkeeper tried to clear it away from danger.
Son Heung-min bailed out Tottenham with an incredible Olympic goal, leading from the front when the team needed him the most. Despite Forster’s forgettable, error-strewn display in between the sticks, Son defended the ex-England international, who actually denied both Zirkzee and Amad in the second half.
“To be fair, I don’t think it’s his mistake,” Son said on CBS Sports after the game.
“I mean how many times did he save us this season? I can’t even count. He’s been unbelievable and outstanding even today before we conceded the goal, he made a couple of good saves.
“He’s an experienced player so we move on together. I’m going to give him a little cuddle!”
-> Tottenham to prioritise goalkeeper signing in January
With Guglielmo Vicario unlikely to return from ankle surgery until late February, Forster is likely to play a big role this season. After the game against Man United, both Ange Postecoglou and Son backed the English goalkeeper regardless of his howlers. It was great to see the head coach and the skipper support the 36-year-old, who has saved Tottenham’s skin in the last few games.

Big Ange had said the club would not be investing in a goalkeeper in January following Vicario’s injury but he might consider his decision after Forster’s display on Thursday. However, for now, he will do everything possible to help Forster regain his confidence ahead of big games.
