Vicario sending confidence to Keeley while on loan

Tottenham Hotspur are facing a delicate situation as far as their goalkeeping department goes with Guglielmo Vicario expected to spend over a month more on the treatment table following his ankle injury some weeks ago which required surgery, while his understudy Fraser Forster is aged 36 and does not have too many years under his belt, not least with the Lilywhites.

As a result, Spurs are investing in the progress of a young player from their ranks in Josh Keeley, who is currently out on loan at Leyton Orient having formerly spent time on the books of Barnet too. The latest developments occurring around him do suggest that Tottenham Hotspur have a lot of faith in the player as it is believed Vicario is personally taking out time to mentor him.

John Wenham, a popular Tottenham Hotspur podcaster, was quoted saying the below in relation to Vicario as well as Spurs legend Pat Jennings keeping in touch with Keeley while closely monitoring his development (via Tottenham Hotspur News).

“Even while he was on loan with Barnet, Vicario went to watch him a couple of times. He is often in contact, as is Jennings, who is also an Irishman and an idol for Josh. Therefore, it seems as though he is really well-liked and highly thought of at Tottenham. And they certainly see him as someone who has a long-term future at the club.”

Josh Keeley has had regular minutes under his belt at Leyton Orient this season, although regardless of Forster potentially departing the club next summer or not, it is perhaps too soon for the 21-year-old to be a first team player at Tottenham Hotspur, even if it were to be as a back-up behind Guglielmo Vicario for the foreseeable future.

The real test for the Irishman is expected to come next season when he is reportedly going to be loaned to a Championship club. It remains to be seen where exactly in the second division he will play, though in either case, a run in the tier below the Premier League could be a pivotal step in Josh Keeley having the desired experience to feature for Spurs’ senior side.
