Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 6-3 by Liverpool on Sunday
Tottenham Hotspur’s 6-3 defeat to Liverpool at home was a bitter pill to swallow for the fans on Sunday.
Ange Postecoglou’s side shipped six more goals to make it nine conceded at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in just two games. It also ended their two-game winning run in all competitions.
Liverpool tore the Lilywhites apart and could have easily scored more goals on another night, exposing the defensive frailties at large for the home side. Tottenham have been vulnerable at the back since the start of the season, and with so many injuries across the pitch, they just didn’t possess the quality to stop the league leaders.

Obviously, Ange Postecoglou was left deflated after watching his side smashed by Liverpool but he also pointed out the fact that his squad is seriously depleted and the luxurious Arne Slot has in contrast to him.
Facing the media after the game, the Greek-Aussie tactician was asked whether he could get through the next three games with the same group of players. He said (h/t Football London):
“We’ve been doing that for the last three weeks. Pretty much after the City game we had a look at it and we knew this would be our toughest period for sure. We’ve had shorter turnarounds than just about every opponent we’ve played so far, shorter rest days than every team we’ve played whether it’s here or in Europe.
“And I haven’t been able to rotate the team, rest players or rotate players. I have massive admiration for the efforts these players are putting in for this club at the moment. We know what a difficult situation it is and that’s not going to change in the short-term. We’ve just got to push on.”
To put things into context, Tottenham had five starters missing against Slot’s Liverpool with players unavailable which included their first-choice centre-backs and goalkeeper.

Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie are key elements of the Spurs backline, and to not having them in the starting XI will certainly have an impact on their defensive structure. Ben Davies has also been out with a hamstring problem, making it more difficult for Big Ange to rotate his squad.

In addition, Rodrigo Bentancur has been serving a seven-game domestic ban which finally ended with the Liverpool fixture, while attackers such as Wilson Odobert, Richarlison and Mikey Moore have not played for over a month and will not see the pitch again in 2024.
