Former Tottenham keeper backs North Londoners to sign Liverpool player

published :

Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to bring in a new goalkeeper in the upcoming 2025 transfer intervals as Daniel Levy looks to revamp the goalkeeping roster at Hotspur Way, and the Lilywhites have been subject to links to multiple players in the position, with the latest of them being Liverpool’s recently-axed goalie Caiomhin Kelleher.

There is a bit of a situation between the post at Hotspur Way with first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario serving the sidelines following his ankle surgery. Ange Postecoglou has been forced to play 36-year-old veteran Fraser Forster, and while the former Southampton player hasn’t been half bad, there is a need to bring in a rather young presence who can not only serve as a backup to Italian but also eventually compete for the starting spot with the former Empoli ace.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson insists that 26-year-old Kelleher would be an option for the Lilywhites with the Ireland international playing as an understudy to Alisson Becker at Anfield Stadium while his performances in the Brazilian’s absence warrant a possible regular starting role.

Speaking in the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, Robinson said:

“There’s nobody out there at the moment, which is why I disagree; I don’t think there’s a huge rush. Fraser Forster’s done okay; he’s a good goalkeeper.

“You look at him, you look at the experience that he’s got, and I don’t think for what you’re going to get on loan or as an emergency signing now for what you’re going to buy now, you need to buy better than what you’ve got.

“I’m not so sure you do when you look at the options out there, January is always typically, it’s a difficult month to do business. They’re linked with John Victor, aren’t they? Remember where he plays his football now, he’s on loan at Botafogo, he’s on loan at Valladolid last year, I think.

“He’s got a little bit of experience but you’re paying five or six million for a goalkeeper that’s untried and untested at that level. [They’re] linked with Anthony Patterson at Sunderland, 24 years old. He’s a good goalkeeper, not so sure he goes in ahead of Fraser Forster, not sure you trust the goalkeeper that you bring in at that age.

“Don’t bring somebody in who’s not better than what you’ve already got, [I] just don’t think there’s anybody out there in January that would fit the bill.

“Kelleher’s time at Liverpool with Marmadashvili coming in, that would be a brilliant option if we were talking in the summer.”

For Tottenham, any potential transfer for Kelleher will align with Daniel Levy’s transfer strategy of building a team that combines experience with youth and while Vicario’s future at White Hart Lane may still be secure, but a younger goalkeeper like Kelleher could provide the necessary competition for the starting role which in turn would push both him and Vicario (ideally creating a high competitive front that pushes both to give their best).

But it is highly doubtful that the 26-year-old will move to a place where he has to again play as a fiddle in someone’s shadow (like he is doing at Liverpool right now).
