“I felt sorry for…” – Ex-Spurs scout express sympathy for Tottenham ace after 6-3 Liverpool defeat

Tottenham Hotspur were on the receiving end of a 6-3 thrashing against Liverpool at White Hart Lane yesterday, and it was one of those performances where if you are a Spurs supporter, you just want to look away with the Lilywhites defence all over the place amid Archie Gray being forced to be deployed into a centre-back role.

Archie Gray has been starting at the heart of defence of late owing to injury problems at Hotspur Way, where Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are serving the sidelines alongside veteran defender Ben Davies, who was supposed to serve as a backup to the aforementioned duo. Now, Ange Postecoglou has been forced to play teenage sensation Gray (who is a midfielder) in the defence.

With the horrendous performance, former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara couldn’t help but highlight ample problems in this Tottenham side.

King express sympathy for Gray

Ange Postecoglou plays down injury concerns of Tottenham star Archie Gray.
Archie Gray is yet to hit his stride at Tottenham Hotspur, though playing beyond his preferred position doesn’t help the cause.

With the performance that the Lilywhites put in yesterday, many are left feeling sorry for the 18-year-old Gray and one of them is ex-Tottenham scout Bryan King. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King said:

“I’ve seen games like that before, especially when young players have been involved. To be honest, I felt sorry for Gray. It wasn’t a good performance from him, but it is hard for a young player, especially when they’re up against that kind of quality.

“I mean the pace at which Liverpool attacked was proof that they are at the moment the best team in the Premier League, and Gray got exposed. However, he wasn’t alone; some of the more experienced players couldn’t handle the game either.”

King’s words show his deep understanding and experience in the game as he highlights how Gray faces at such a young age, is being thrown into the deep end and in a position in which the teenager is unfamiliar against one of the most potent attacking sides in Europe.

And while Archie’s performance was not perfect, the game did highlight the depth of Spurs defensive issues, with even senior players struggling to contain Liverpool’s relentless press and counterattacks.
