The Tottenham promise saw them beat off Manchester City & Liverpool to prodigious British talent

Tottenham Hotspur grinded through multiple suitors to land Archie Gray in the previous summer transfer window, with the North Londoners coming into the picture in the eleventh hour to hijack the teenager’s move from Brentford. Many Spurs supporters were surprised at Daniel Levy and the club for paying £40 million for an 18-year-old with barely a year’s experience in the English second tier.

The Lilywhites brought in one of England’s most exciting sensations, but he has barely been featuring in his preferred midfield or right-back role given how the North Londoners are stacked in both positions at the moment following Djed Spence’s resurgence; however, he has seen a fair bit of game time donning the Spurs badge this season.

Promised game time to Archie Gray?

Archie Gray gives Big Ange and Tottenham food for thought with England u-21 display.
Archie Gray was promised game time to join Tottenham.

And The Daily Mail’s journalist Sami Mokbel (via. GMS) understands that Tottenham promised significant game time to the youngster to bring him to North London as Spurs beat interest from Manchester City and Liverpool for Gray’s signature.

Pep Guardiola’s City spoke to the teenager and wanted to offer him developmental football before integrating him into the first team, while Tottenham were willing to fast-track his opportunities with the first team for the eight-cap England U21 international. And Spurs have stuck to their words.

His recent deployment in the middle of the defence (while it is not his natural position) is proof of Spurs commitment to handing Gray more opportunities and even so throwing him at the far end to aid his development.

Spurs supporters have had mixed reactions to Gray’s performances, but he has shown glimpses of his potential at N17, and it’s clear that Tottenham sees him as a long-term investment.
