Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 6-3 by Liverpool at home on Sunday
Tottenham Hotspur suffered a chastening evening at the hands of Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
Ange Postecoglou’s side were second-best in every department throughout the game, losing 6-3 to the Reds. On another evening, it could have been a much more embarrassing scoreline for the home side. They did well to come back and make it a game but eventually, Liverpool had way too much quality.
Spurs’ topsy-turvy season continued, as after beating the likes of Southampton (Premier League) and Manchester United (Carabao Cup), they lost to Liverpool and dropped 11th in the table. Ange Postecoglou was visibly deflated as the goals went in as he lacked options to bring off the bench to change the course of the game.

Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min was equally hurt by the “painful” defeat to Liverpool. He was extremely disappointed with the result but promised the fans that the team would bounce back stronger.
“Very disappointed with the result and conceding six goals is really painful,” Son Heung-min told Sky Sports (h/t BBC).
“What can I say? As a footballer, you always want to play. At the moment, we have to work hard. I don’t want to make any excuses. We tried to be as sharp as possible.
“There is no question as to why they are top of the league. You can see [they have] quality players with top discipline. There is a reason they are top. If you give them a mistake, they punish you.
“Football is always risky, even if you sit back you can still concede so many goals. We have to stick together in difficult times and also in good times.
“Today is painful. We have to move together and bounce back stronger.”
Most of the Spurs’ players were from all over North London, including Son Heung-min. The South Korean star had an extremely poor game, failing to make an impact. He was anonymous during his 82-minute stay on the pitch before being replaced by Timo Werner.

The 32-year-old was wasteful in possession, often failing to find the right pass in the final third and threatening the Liverpool backline. He barely got the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose enterprising runs down the right and idea to drift into midfield pulled Son out of position multiple times.

The veteran forward ran out of steam as the game wore on. The defeat to Liverpool was another underlined Son’s diminishing powers and inability to influence the games he once did during his heydays. Perhaps, it is high time for the club chiefs at the Hotspur Way to accept that the Spurs skipper is now past his prime and needs to be slowly phased out of the first team.
Nonetheless, it was an underwhelming team display on Sunday, something Big Ange will hope changes when Tottenham take on high-flying Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.
