Redknapp believes Tottenham and Postecoglou ‘need’ to win a trophy this season

Tottenham Hotspur’s 6-3 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on home soil saw them stay in the bottom half of the Premier League standings heading into Christmas. Ange Postecoglou’s side now has more losses (8) than wins (7) in the ongoing campaign, and with the forms of Arsenal, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Newcastle United above them, a top-four berth is looking increasingly unlikely for the Lilywhites.

One of Postecoglou’s main goals this season was leading the team back to the Champions League and while all has not been lost for that cause, it is clear that the Australian will need to make up in other competitions in order to alleviate the pressure of losing out on qualification into the European Cup with a commendable finish in the league table.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes that the ex-Celtic manager is in need of a trophy this season to make the fans forget about missing out on a top-four spot. Spurs have not won a single piece of silverware since 2008, so it goes without saying that a trophy will paper a lot of cracks that are there for all to see in the squad, at least at this point in time. Daily Mail quoted Redknapp saying the following.

“He needs a cup. He needs a cup now because it looks like the top four is out of the picture. The club hasn’t won a trophy for so long. That’s what he’s got to be thinking about. He said a lot of quotes lately, but one was that he ‘always wins a trophy in my second year’.”

Ange Postecoglou’s quote about the correlation between trophies and his second seasons at clubs could become one of the most gutsy statements a manager has made, or in some way, contribute to his possible firing from Hotspur Way at the end of the campaign. Nonetheless, there is still a lot to play for before the season comes to a close.

Tottenham’s best shot at wining a trophy this season is undoubtedly in the Carabao Cup. They have seen off the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United, so the next time the team steps onto the pitch in the competition, the morale will be high. Interestingly, the semi-final of the EFL Cup sees Spurs come up against Liverpool in a two-legged tie. With Arne Slot’s focus being on the Champions League and Premier League, he could make some rotations in that particular meeting.

In the Europa League as well, Tottenham remain in a relatively comfortable spot, so there is every reason to believe that they can emerge as outside contenders to win the continental cup come the end of the season.
