Tottenham Hotspur suffered a horrendous loss against Liverpool at White Hart Lane yesterday, with the Reds getting the better of the hosts on a 6-3 timeline, and Manchester United icon Gary Neville has lashed out at the Lilywhites and has singled out criticism for South Korean skipper Heung Min Son for his ‘silly’ moment in the game.
Ange Postecoglou’s side was trailing by 2-0 inside 36 minutes before under-fire midfielder James Maddison notched one back before the visitors went bonkers.
Neville lashes into Son
Spurs are known for their all-attack style of play that they deploy under Ange Postecoglou, albeit they have also paid hefty defeats owing to defensive lapses like they did against the Reds yesterday. And it was one particular moment that Neville highlights where Heung Min Son is pressing Joe Gomez in the second half, who lofts that ball in the path of Trent Alexander Arnold to beat the press.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, former Manchester United fullback said:
“They’ve got a really exciting front six, but I did put a clip in during the second half, which we don’t normally do, showing Son making a silly press towards Joe Gomez and the ball getting played past him over to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“They do some stupid things like that, which almost forces the full-backs then to jump out and press and then, all of a sudden, it leaves a situation like the third goal.”
While Gary Neville’s criticism of Heung Min Son’s pressing mistake is certainly valid in that isolated moment, it is also crucial to remember that Ange’s tactical approach is very much built around aggressive pressing, and this game (like multiple others) is a lesson for Spurs to adapt a more balanced approach, especially against teams that hurt you every time they get space.
