“Make a difference”- Pundit weighs in on Postecoglou’s injury concerns at Tottenham

Tottenham’s injury list piled up during their Boxing Day defeat to Nottingham Forest

Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult season continued on Boxing Day as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to high-flying Nottingham Forest at City Ground.

It was the Lilywhites’ ninth defeat of the Premier League season, with former manager Nuno Espirito Santo and his boys piling the pressure on Ange Postecoglou via a first-half strike from Anthony Elanga. They now sit 11th in the table after 18 games, and for a club of Spurs’ stature, that’s utterly embarrassing.

The game at Nottingham Forest was Tottenham’s fourth in just two weeks, and with the squad cannot catch a break from injuries, it is no surprise the team looked fatigued in the defeat.

Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Wilson Odobert and Richarlison are all currently sidelined with injuries, while academy starlet Mikey Moore has been out for over a month with bad illness. Destiny Udogie, Son Heung-min and Ben Davies have also taken trips to the treatment room, with the latter on the comeback trail from a hamstring problem.

Postecoglou’s tactics and defensive organisation have come under scrutiny, but there’s certainly an argument to suggest he has been extremely unfortunate when it comes to injuries this season.

Dissecting Tottenham’s defeat to Nottingham Forest on ESPN FC, Don Hutchinson sympathised with the Australian tactician over the injury situation at White Hart Lane. When asked by host Dan Thomas how much can Postecoglou use it as an excuse, the former midfielder claimed that the injuries suffered to his squad’s core group of players have undoubtedly had an impact on Spurs’ performance levels this season.

“I think you’ve got to take it and look at the list. It’s going to make a difference especially when it’s your goalkeeper and your two centre-backs. I mean that’s like the core side isn’t it,” Don Hutchinson said on ESPN FC.

“When you’re taking Romero, you’re taking Van de Ven, take Vicario, you can sort of substitute other players if Richarlison gets injured you still got Son and you can see rotate in the middle of the midfield if you get injuries, but they’re just the side at the minute where you just don’t back them.”

To make matters worse on Boxing Day, Big Ange lost two of his back four, with Radu Dragusin coming off injured in the second half while Djed Spence was sent off for two bookable offences in stoppage time.

Dragusin has been paired with young midfielder Archie Gray in central defence in recent games, and with the Romanian suffering a suspected muscle problem against Forest, Tottenham can ill afford to lose more of their defensive players. So, one can understand the problems Big Ange has been facing almost after every game or between matches.

Without any second thoughts, the club chiefs have to invest in the market for a central defender and forward in the upcoming transfer window to help Big Ange get Spurs’ season back on track.
