Postecoglou no longer counting on Tottenham veteran in his preferred role

Postecoglou doesn’t see Davies as a left back anymore

Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a double injury blow in their backline with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven injured since several weeks. While they recovered briefly, both centre backs suffered fresh setbacks and are still serving some time out on the treatment table though they are now in the final stages of their respective recoveries.

Ange Postecoglou breaks silence on Ben Davies amid Tottenham contract talks.

In the interim, Spurs have had just one natural central defender in Radu Dragusin, who has done a fairly decent job. Next to him, Ben Davies has played more often than not with Archie Gray also having a couple of appearances in the heart of defence. Davies and Gray are naturally full backs, so their contributions at centre back were particularly handy for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

According to TBR Football, the Australian head coach has decided that he will no longer count on Davies on the left side. The Welshman is set to be a central defender in the manager’s eyes hereon and is expected to play as a back-up option behind Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin as far as the pecking order is concerned.

Davies is 31 and no longer has the legs to put in the shifts at full back, which Destiny Udogie has been doing to commendable measure since the campaign got underway. Meanwhile, Djed Spence, originally a right back, was also used on the left side of the back four and did an admirable job. The 24-year-old could very possibly be the understudy to Udogie for the remainder of the season.

It will be interesting to see if Postecoglou’s plans with Davies change if indeed Spurs land a natural central defender in the January transfer window or whether that is to be taken as a sign that the next few months are the final ones of the Welshman’s lengthy career at Hotspur Way.
