Ange Postecoglou confident of Spurs revival amid injury crisis

Tottenham will require something special to break into the top four this season

Tottenham Hotspur are on a difficult run of poor results which has heaped pressure on boss Ange Postecoglou. They were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest at City Ground on Boxing Day—a result that kept the North Londoners in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Spurs haven’t got going this season thanks largely due to their injury problems. The defensive unit, particularly, has been decimated due to persistent injuries. Currently, Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van den Ven and Ben Davies are all on the sidelines and not expected to return soon.

Ange Postecoglou has received a lot of stick and criticism over his open tactics and attacking style of play amidst his squad’s troublesome injury crisis. Having managed just one win in the last six Premier League games, the Australian tactician has come under fire in recent weeks.

Tottenham’s performances and results in Big Ange’s second season have not been good enough

However, the Tottenham boss says he is not even thinking about being under pressure because he is too busy focusing on trying to build a successful team at White Hart Lane. Facing the media ahead of Spurs’ final game of 2024 vs Wolverhampton Wanderers, Postecoglou said (h/t Football London):

“I get where people kind of look at my situation and think: ‘Jeez, he needs to do something or else he is in trouble’ but I don’t think that way. It’s not how I am wired.

“I’m not concerned about that aspect of this role. Like I said, what excites me about this role and what I love about doing what I do is the possibilities you can create something special and that’s what I am going to try and do.

“I will keep doing what I am doing. It doesn’t add any pressure or I don’t feel any extra anxiety about anything. I firmly believe we will get through this and come out stronger and create the team we want to be.”

Daniel Levy will need to loosen his purse strings in January and back Big Ange with a couple of quality signings

Big Ange has constantly been upbeat in his pressers, often focusing on the positives after every result. The buck starts and stops with the manager and he has always taken responsibility for his team’s performances. The 59-year-old has been hamstrung with an injury crisis this season, hampering the progress he wanted to make after a fine first campaign in North London.

With every bad result, the pressure has certainly increased on the Greek-Australian boss. Come what the situation is, he is wary it is a results business and must start picking up points to keep his job secure. Big Ange has to help Tottenham negotiate the tough situation they find themselves in and for doing that he would definitely require some help from chairman Daniel Levy in the transfer market next month.
