Tottenham star Djed Spence to miss out on Wolves game due to suspension

Tottenham Hotspur were on the losing end against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day and things went from bad to worse in stoppage time of the game’s second half when Djed Spence was showing a second yellow card, resulting in his dismissal before full-time. The 24-year-old looked perplexed at the referee’s decision and understandably, there were doubts over whether or not he should have been sent off for the challenge.

In spite of doubts pertaining over the player’s red card, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher made it clear that there was little to doubt regarding the challenge speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch. He was quoted saying the following words by Football London when asked about the matter.

“He doesn’t need to do it. It’s not wise in the 94th minute, no need to do it. No intention to play the ball, he’s paid for a rash moment of angriness earlier when he threw the ball away.”

Indeed, it is hard to argue with Gallagher’s verdict even though it is a mutual consensus amongst all fanbases around England that Premier League officials can make some ridiculous decisions. And though Spence’s challenge did not warrant a straight red card, it certainly was a yellow due to tempers boiling over in stoppage time with Tottenham on the brink of their second straight defeat.

What Spence’s suspension means is that he will miss one game, which happens to be Tottenham Hotspur’s meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, December 29th. They are severely depleted and have no fit central defenders to call upon, so the English full back’s unavailability further compounds their misery.

Nevertheless, the red card, especially when the match was practically a lost cause, does little to take away the player’s good form in recent outings. It will be interesting to see how Ange Postecoglou utilises him in the second half of the season and whether or not there is a place for him in the Europa League squad as well after interestingly missing out of the roster for the league phase.
