Ange Postecoglou set to hand his Tottenham Hotspur stars a holiday following Wolves draw

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has emphasized the need for his players to take a break following their 2-2 draw with Wolves, a result that extended their winless run in the Premier League to three matches. Despite a valiant effort to overturn a deficit with goals from Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson, Jorgen Strand Larsen’s late equalizer denied Spurs a much-needed victory.

With his squad heavily depleted due to injuries, Postecoglou highlighted the physical and mental toll on his players (h/t The Express).

“We’re asking a lot of a small core group of players,” he said. “The whole group probably needs a couple of days to get away and recover… It will do them good to go away with their families to recover mentally as much as physically.”

The call for respite comes at a critical juncture as Spurs prepare for a daunting series of fixtures, starting with Newcastle United on January 4, followed by clashes against Liverpool, Tamworth, and Arsenal.

Injuries and Fixture Congestion Compound Spurs’ Struggles

Tottenham’s injury woes have left Postecoglou with a threadbare squad. All four senior centre-backs are carrying injuries, and Destiny Udogie is the latest casualty with a suspected hamstring issue. These setbacks have forced Postecoglou to rely on a small group of players, with little room for rotation amid a relentless winter schedule.

Spurs’ recent form reflects the challenges of managing a stretched squad. Losses to Nottingham Forest and Liverpool followed a promising run, including a 5-0 thrashing of Southampton and a confident victory over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup. The Wolves draw, however, underscores the team’s need for reinforcements and recovery.

Postecoglou’s frustration with the situation is evident. Voicing the selection headache at his disposal, here is what he said via Football.London:

“We’ve got no choice unless I throw another 18 or 17-year-old out there—well, that’s the only fit players we have at the moment.”

Postecoglou’s decision to prioritize rest is a pragmatic move, given the demanding schedule ahead. Allowing players time to recharge could help Spurs rediscover their form and approach upcoming challenges with renewed energy.

However, the injury crisis underscores the need for Tottenham to act decisively in the January transfer window to bolster their squad. Whether Fabio Paratici’s presence at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Wolves hints at a busy January window remains to be seen.
