Tottenham eye bargain January deal for Lyon midfielder Maxence Caqueret

Tottenham are eyeing a cut-price deal for Lyon star Maxence Caqueret

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to dip their toes in the January transfer window after being plagued by injuries and hugely inconsistent displays.

The Lilywhites have failed to gain any sort of momentum or rhythm thanks largely due to their injury crisis. The resources at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal have been stretched, and with an XI that is constantly chopping and changing, with Destiny Udogie becoming the latest casualty, one cannot expect him to grind out results every week.

Thus, club honcho Daniel Levy has to back Ange Postecoglou with a couple of quality signings next month if the North Londoners are to get their season back on track. And it looks like he has already identified a target.

Big Ange is looking to add a bit more muscle and energy to his midfield unit in January

According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are monitoring the situation of Maxence Caqueret at Lyon ahead of a possible swoop in this transfer window.

While Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray were among the summer recruits from IF Djurgarden and Leeds United, respectively, Ange Postecoglou will entertain the possibility of luring Maxence Caqueret to White Hart Lane if Lyon put him on the transfer market with a paltry price tag.

Caqueret enjoyed his breakout season at Lyon in 2020/21 and, since then, he hasn’t looked back. The defensive midfielder has become a mainstay in the team over the years, racking up 184 appearances across all competitions. However, he has been in and out of the team this season.

The 24-year-old’s future at his boyhood club has become uncertain as Lyon faces a January transfer ban and provisional relegation due to financial irregularities, and thus could be forced into a January fire-sale. The Ligue 1 side are desperately looking to raise mid-season funds and the potential sale of Caqueret could help them to a certain extent.

Yves Bissouma is not a defensive midfielder but has been forced to operate as one due to lack of options

Spurs are planning to knock cash-strapped Lyon down into a bargain sale for one of the hugely talented academy graduates. The aforementioned report adds that the North London club are closely following the situation ahead of potentially seizing the chance to sign the Frenchman if Lyon are forced to sell Caqueret, who would fit the profile and bill at N17 amid Big Ange’s aims to sign a central midfielder on a modest budget.

In Caqueret, Tottenham could finally land a natural defensive midfielder who is not only a solid ball-winner but also adept at dictating the pace of the game and creating opportunities from deep. At 24, he is still some years away from hitting his prime and would instantly enhance Big Ange’s first XI.
