“That is a deal which could happen…” – Ex-scout backs Tottenham for a swap deal involving goalkeeper

Tottenham Hotspur have been rumoured to bring in a new goalkeeper in the recently commenced winter transfer window, with Sunderland sensation Anthony Patterson being among the options for Daniel Levy as he looks to strengthen the keeping union in Ange Postecoglou’s roster.

The Lilywhites have been in a bit of an injury crisis at the back; the injury concerns to the North Londoners defensive unit have been complemented by first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario joining the treatment room following his ankle surgery, and while 36-year-old Fraser Forster has been doing decently, there is a need for a long-term keeper who can take up the reins at N17.

And despite the situation, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano insists that Spurs are not in the race to sign a goalkeeper in the ongoing January window. However, the aforementioned claim from the Italian has been disputed by Alan Nixon, who reckons that Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is an “option” at White Hart Lane.

King wants Patterson on a player-plus-cash deal

Tottenham are reportedly looking forward to sign Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson in the forthcoming transfer window.

Now, former Lilywhites scout Bryan King insists that Daniel Levy should explore the possibilities of involving Brandon Austin in a potential player-plus-cash deal to pursue a move for Patterson. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King said:

“Tottenham definitely need to sign another goalkeeper. However, signing Patterson in January might be difficult. Austin doesn’t seem close to getting an opportunity at Tottenham. Therefore, perhaps Spurs could offer Austin plus cash to sign Patterson.

“At present, Austin is Spurs’ number two, and it would make sense for Spurs’ number two to be offered in a deal for Sunderland’s number one. That is a deal which could happen. However, would Sunderland, who are pushing for promotion, want to get rid of one of their main assets?

“Money would need to be included, and I don’t think it would be small money, because at present Sunderland don’t need to sell, but Spurs do need to sign a goalkeeper because if anything happens to Fraser Forster, they could be in trouble.”

At the moment, it looks like the pursuit of Patterson may be a relatively low-risk, high-reward move for Tottenham, given how they can secure a top keeper’s signature for the long term, especially given the market where top-tier goalkeepers are increasingly hard to come by. But it is to be seen if Levy takes this up as a priority given all the contrary reports.
