Tottenham Hotspur are in the midst of an injury crisis in the defensive part of the roster at White Hart Lane, and a certain section of the North Londoners supporters has been vying for a possible loan recall for Ashley Phillips to add depth in the position.
The Welshman has been playing some impressive football for his temporary employers, starting 14 of Stoke City’s 25 games in the English second division, which backed the Lilywhites to consider concluding his loan deal prematurely last month.
Tottenham to recall Ashley Phillips?
And now former Tottenham goalkeeper turned pundit, Paul Robinson, has discussed the probabilities of Spurs recalling Ashley Phillips from his loan spell to patch the ongoing injury “crisis.” Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, he said:
“Knowing the player before he went to Stoke, he’s certainly an option to be recalled to address the current injury crisis, but he was sent out on loan to gain experience.
“If he’s going to be recalled from his loan, does he play instead of who is now? If he does, absolutely. If he doesn’t, go and get someone better.
“Where Tottenham is now, if they are to bring in a new defender, they need to bring in someone who is better than who is available right now. Currently, they’ve got a few square pegs in round holes.”
Given Phillips’ performances, complemented by the injuries to Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and their veteran backup, Welshman Ben Davies, it does make sense to recall the 19-year-old; however, with the January transfer window underway, there is also a possibility that Levy doesn’t disturb Ashley’s progress midseason and rather looks for opportunities in the market.

There also remains the question of if Phillips were to return to White Hart Lane this winter, would he be guaranteed first-team minutes, or would he simply be an added option on the bench without being able to gain minutes over more experienced defenders in the squad?
