Son tipped to pick up a coaching role at Tottenham

Son Heung-min has been one of the most underperforming players at Tottenham Hotspur. The first team’s captain has been a shadow of his former self after missing a handful of games through some fitness concerns while also contributing to a measly seven goals and six assists in 23 appearances across all competitions so far in the campaign.

The South Korean international’s back-ups have not done too well either, much to the frustration of the fans as well as the manager. Timo Werner has been substandard for much of the season until this point whereas Richarlison’s injury problems are worse than Son’s, although his return to action is anticipated sooner than later.

Some have already called for Son’s departure for good following the end of the campaign while also not endorsing the club’s plans of triggering a contract extension until 2026 for a player that has not lived up to the billing. Former Tottenham scout Bryan King believes otherwise, however, as he feels Son should remain at the club in some capacity.

He had the following to say regarding the forward’s future, via Tottenham Hotspur News.

“It would be a big mistake to let him go in January. He is one of the best and most loyal players at Tottenham. I’m not sure what is happening with this contract situation. However, I can’t see why they would want to lose Son. There is no sense in them letting him leave. The only sensible thing to do would be to extend his contract. They could even use him in a coaching role if they’re unsure of how many games he will be able to play next season.”

While Bryan King is usually spot-on with his takes, it is hard to agree with him in this case. Son has been a liability in the Tottenham attack this season and keeping him in the squad is a detrimental step. The board will use his presence in the team as an excuse to not sign a replacement, whereas players who are not ready for regular minutes, like Mikey Moore, could be pushed into the mix with unnecessary pressure on their shoulders.

The coaching idea is not bad though it remains to be seen if Son is receptive to those plans. Ange Postecoglou would warmly welcome the player into his staff but there could be offers from elsewhere which Son accepts to prolong his playing career.
