Former England captain critical of Tottenham Hotspur’s defence after Newcastle loss

Romano gives latest on Tottenham pursuit of £55m forward Kolo Muani.

The pressure continues to rise on Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham Hotspur continue to struggle in the ongoing 2024/25 Premier League campaign, and this time around, Newcastle United visited White Hart Lane to hand the Lilywhites a 2-1 blow as the club continues to fade away from their objectives of a probable Champions League qualification.

It is not the goals conceded but rather the manner of those goals, and this has been something that has haunted the Lilywhites on multiple occasions this season. Defensively, the hosts looked apart, and it was easy to find space between the lines, and at times it seemed too easy for the Toons to get in front of Brandon Austin’s goal.

Pressure increase on Ange as defensive problems come to light

The Australian tactician has clarified that his squad needs proper rest and relaxation ahead of their high-octane battle against Newcastle on January 4.
Ange Postecoglou has come into criticism for defensive problems on multiple occasions

Former Manchester City and England captain Steph Houghton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, spoke about how the Lilywhites find it difficult to defend in transition situations. He said (via. BBC)

The way Ange Postecoglou has got Spurs playing… they’re so open. When those transition moments happen, it is hard for them to get into their shape.

Many Spurs supporters have been very vocal about their criticisms of the all-out attack playing style that Ange Postecoglou deploys at White Hart Lane, as a hard push on the attacking pedal always leaves them scrapping defensively. We have seen this happen on multiple occasions along his reins at N17, and something rightly needs to be done about it.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

There is no question that the attacking sequences that Ange has deployed have brought some joy to the Tottenham fans; however, unless the defensive frailties are addressed, any hopes of challenging for Champions League spots this season will continue to fade.
