Tottenham’s struggles continued as they suffered their third defeat in four games, losing 2-1 to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday. The loss dropped Spurs to 12th place and intensified the pressure further on Ange Postecoglou, with fans increasingly calling for his sacking.
Despite the team’s visible effort, the match left supporters frustrated, and Alan Shearer criticised Pedro Porro’s bad contribution during the build-up to Newcastle’s opening goal.
Spurs took an early lead with Dominic Solanke’s header from Pedro Porro’s cross, but Newcastle equalised swiftly as Joelinton intercepted Lucas Bergvall’s pass, setting up Anthony Gordon to score. Alexander Isak put Newcastle ahead before halftime, and despite Tottenham dominating the second half and creating chances, they couldn’t find an equaliser. Ange Postecoglou praised his players’ effort, though questions were raised about Porro’s mistake that allowed Gordon space.
Inconsistency strikes with all of Tottenham
Pedro Porro, who joined Tottenham from Sporting CP after impressing during his loan spell, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top right-backs. His versatility is evident, having also featured in more advanced midfield roles. With 78 appearances for Spurs and 23 goal contributions, his offensive output is remarkable for a defender.
However, despite his performance against Newcastle being one of the team’s better displays, Alan Shearer criticised his decision-making. Shearer pointed out the risks of leaving his position prematurely, especially against a team like Newcastle, known for their pressing. This misjudgment contributed to Tottenham’s ongoing struggles, with just one win in their last eight Premier League games.
Shearer speaking to Premier League TV production, criticised the Spaniard
“From a Tottenham point of view, you know Newcastle love pressing, why on earth encourage them? Why on earth is the goalkeeper passing it out? Why on earth Porro gone 15-20 yards further forward from where should be. Because, Newcastle will punish them.”

Spurs are currently grappling with injuries and illness among their key defenders. Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin, despite being unwell throughout the week, still put in commendable efforts. A new goalkeeper made his debut, and Sergio Reguilon returned to the fold after a prolonged absence.
Given these challenges, Ange Postecoglou’s pride in his team’s performance seems justified. However, the upcoming week will be pivotal for the Australian tactician’s future at N17.
