Tottenham not planning on signing a left back in January
Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive crisis has gone from bad to worse with Destiny Udogie suffering an injury that is expected to rule him out of action for the next six to 10 weeks, so very possibly until March. The Italian international has been a regular fixture in Ange Postecoglou’s back four, so his absence is practically as grave as Cristian Romero’s or Micky van de Ven’s.
Following the news of his layoff for a significant amount of time, it was expected that Tottenham Hotspur would be in the market in January on the lookout for a left back. The Lilywhites are in desperate need of some additions and at this point, it only seems logical that they spend a reasonable amount on revamping their squad for what’s remaining in 2024/25.
According to Daily Mail (h/t Tottenham Hotspur News), however, the Tottenham board remains content with its existing options and has shelved plans of bringing in a left back to act as Destiny Udogie’s fill-in. The source adds that other additions are in consideration but there is still no concrete update about the club’s hierarchy holding any talks for their preferred targets.
Tottenham have made some pathetic decisions in the recent transfer windows and not signing a left back to realistically compete with Udogie has to be right up there with some of their poorest calls. The 22-year-old is not injured for the first time and yet, he does not even have a reliable back up in the first team squad, which highlights the poor squad planning considering participation in four different competitions.

For the near future, Ange Postecoglou will have to employ Ben Davies and Djed Spence in the left back position. Davies as a full back is not going to be the most enticing watch given his age and lack of stamina in recent seasons, whereas Spence is a right back and will have his limitations going forward, though it does look like the board is oblivious to some obvious flaws in the squad.
