London rivals preparing five-year contract for Tottenham target

Levy & Lange fly to secure £55m Tottenham deal for Randal Kolo Muani.

Tottenham have been monitoring Lyon midfielder Maxence Caqueret

Tottenham Hotspur have had an underwhelming first half of the season as they sit in 12th spot in the Premier League table.

After watching Ange Postecoglou’s side struggle, the club chiefs are expected to make signings in January to bolster their fight for European spots this season and are likely to target reinforcements in different areas of the pitch. They have already signed Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague—a highly-rated goalkeeper who will challenge Guglielmo Vicario for the No.1 spot once he recovers from injury.

In addition, the Lilywhites have been seemingly trying to beef up their midfield unit as well. They have been subject to links with Lyon midfielder Maxence Caqueret.

Maxence Caqueret enjoyed his breakout season at Lyon in 2020/21 and, since then, he hasn’t looked back. The Frenchman has become a regular fixture in the Lyon side in recent years, impressing with his passing ability, ball-winning and reading of the game.

Spurs have scouted the 24-year-old regularly this season, and considering the player’s uncertain future at Lyon, who face a provisional relegation due to financial irregularities, they could make a move this month. However, it appears as though their London rivals could steal a march in the race for the defensive midfielder’s signature.

According to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato, Crystal Palace are interested in signing Caqueret. They are planning to make an offer of a little less than €20 million whilst handing the 24-year-old a five-year contract. Lyon desperately need to trim their wage bill to meet the requirements of the DNCG and avoid relegation to Ligue 2 and are open to selling their academy product this month.

The Australian tactician has clarified that his squad needs proper rest and relaxation ahead of their high-octane battle against Newcastle on January 4.

The latest development surrounding Caqueret should come as a blow for Tottenham. They have a dire need for some quality players in this ongoing winter window and bringing in someone with Caqueret’s quality and experience in Big Ange’s roster could end up making a big difference.

The former France youth international would address the lack of a pure No.6 in the squad, whilst adding balance to the starting XI and providing a potential base for creative talents such as James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski to thrive. And the fact that the player is available for a modest fee, or possibly even on a loan, suits the North London club’s needs.
