Tottenham-linked Ben Godfrey has sealed a loan switch to Ipswich Town from Atalanta
Tottenham Hotspur have been trying to enhance their quality and depth in the backline, with the Lilywhites suffering on multiple occasions this season owing to a lack of options at the heart of defence.
Ange Postecoglou has been calling for a new central defender for some time, given how stretched his defensive unit looks at the moment. The Australian wanted to sign a new centre-back in the summer window; however, he went into the new campaign without a new face in the position and that has come back to haunt him.
The North Londoners have been devoid of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven’s services for some time now, resulting in forced changes at the back. Thus, it isn’t surprising that they have been linked with several central defenders in recent weeks, and one of those is Atalanta’s Ben Godfrey.

Ben Godfrey raised eyebrows in the summer when he swapped Everton for Atalanta. The move hasn’t gone as per the plan with the defender managing only a total of 93 minutes of first-team football in Bergamo. Atalanta have been willing to let the Englishman leave this January window as he was no longer considered a part of coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s plans.
Now, transfer news guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on his official X account that Ben Godfrey has joined Ipswich Town on loan from Atalanta for the rest of the season.
Tottenham were tentatively linked with Godfrey; however, him joining newly promoted Ipswich Town on loan certainly is not a setback for Postecoglou. The 26-year-old failed to break into the Atalanta side during the first half of the season and has been let go. Before the Atalanta move, the York-born talent did not pull up trees during his four-year stint with Everton, failing to live up to the promise he had shown as a youngster at Norwich City.

Having seen Godfrey return to the Premier League and join Kieran McKenna’s forces at Portman Road, Spurs must quickly switch to other targets to bolster their backline. RC Lens’ highly sought-after talent Abdukodir Khusanov has been extensively scouted by the North Londoners this season.
