Tottenham Hotspur extend Son Heung-min’s contract until 2026

Speculation surrounding the future of Son Heung-min at Tottenham Hotspur has finally been put to rest.

According to the official Tottenham Hotspur website, the Lilywhites have activated the one-year option in the South Korean’s contract. This means he will now be tied to the club until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Having joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015, Son Heung-min has become a global superstar and a modern-day great for the club. The 32-year-old, arguably the most famous footballer in Asia, has gone from strength to strength, scoring 169 goals and supplying 90 assists in 431 appearances for the North Londoners. He is the fourth-highest goalscorer in the club’s history with 169 strikes to his name.

The one-year extension is in line with expectations and protects Tottenham against the South Korean international walking out for nothing at the end of the season or signing a pre-contract agreement with an abroad club this month with a view to a free transfer. The long-term landscape remains ambiguous, though. Son will be 34 by the time his contract expires in 2026, and the forward and the club face complex talks over whether to extend their association for more years.

Son’s contract has been a hot topic for many weeks and months, with his future at White Hart Lane appearing increasingly uncertain as time passed by. Now, the uncertainty has been decisively addressed, ensuring that the versatile attacker remains a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad as they continue to push for silverware this season.

There were rumours of Manchester United harbouring an interest in snapping up Son on a potential free transfer in the summer, while Atletico Madrid have been recently linked with a move. Multiple clubs from across Europe and Saudi Arabia were looking to take advantage of his situation at Tottenham as well.

Son remains a vital figure for Ange Postecoglou’s side, who have won just once in their last eight Premier League games and dropped to a lowly 12th in the table. The Carabao Cup has given the North Londoners some room to salvage their season, albeit they face high-flying Liverpool in a two-legged semi-final tie starting with the home leg on Wednesday.
