Juventus offer Tottenham the opportunity to sign Douglas Luiz on loan

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a good start to the January transfer window by welcoming goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague. The young glovesman has cost the club £12.5m and has penned a deal that sees him stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2031.

Ange Postecoglou, who is under pressure after just one win in the last eight Premier League games, is expected to be backed further in the January transfer window as per highly regarded journalist David Ornstein.

Radu Dragusin and teenage midfield prodigy Archie Gray—signed in the summer from Leeds United—started in central defence in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend. This speaks volumes about the injury issues Ange Postecoglou has been dealing with, especially in defence. So, a centre-back appears to be at the top of the club’s agenda.

The midfield unit doesn’t look like in immediate need of reinforcing when compared to the defence and attack. Yet, Spurs have been linked with several midfielders over the past few weeks and months. Now, according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

One of the more surprising deals of the past summer transfer window saw Douglas Luiz move to Juventus in a £42.3m deal. Aston Villa agreed to the deal, which also saw Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea move the other way from Juventus to Villa Park. However, the Brazilian midfielder has struggled to impress in Serie A since making that big-money move.

Luiz has failed to make himself one of the first names on the team sheet under head coach Thiago Motta after injuries have hampered his progress. Following his struggles in a Juventus shirt, where he has managed only two starts, Aston Villa are considering re-signing the 26-year-old on loan this month. The aforementioned report adds the Turin giants intend to strike a loan deal with an obligation to buy for the South American but completing such an agreement is unlikely at this moment.

Having been offered the chance to sign Luiz on loan, Spurs must take it to beef up the midfield unit. Postecoglou lacks a deep-lying playmaker who is good on the ball and can dictate the tempo of games, with neither Rodrigo Bentancur nor Yves Bissouma demonstrating that required quality to do so.

Adding a Premier League-proven player like Luiz would not only bring balance to the side but also allow creative talents such as James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski to thrive. The Brazil international can also operate as a box-to-box midfielder and further improve Tottenham’s productivity, as evidenced by his ten goals and as many assists for Aston Villa last season.

Keeping all these factors in mind, the North London outfit must try their best to beat Villa to the loan signing of Luiz.
